Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced an investment of $18.7 billion over five years to fund the production of their first electric Land Rover and the second electric vehicle from Jaguar.
In a press release, JLR confirmed that they will start taking orders for an all-electric Range Rover model later this year. According to JLR, the Range Rover has grown from a single model to a model line under the Land Rover umbrella, and the Range Rover EV will be another branch of that family tree. This “medium-size” SUV will go into production in 2025.
The Range Rover EV will be based on a dedicated EV platform called EMA, but JLR plans to retain the current Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) that underpins the current internal combustion Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. This platform is designed to accommodate all-electric and hybrid powertrains as well, JLR noted.

“This gives JLR uncompromised flexibility to adapt its vehicle line up to meet the needs of different markets around the world that are moving at different speeds towards carbon net zero targets,” the release said.
Jaguar will also be introducing three new models, starting with an electric “4-door GT” based on a different platform called JEA, which will start at approximately $125,000. It will be the first Jaguar EV since the launch of the I-Pace crossover SUV in 2019, and is expected to have more power than any previous Jaguar production car, with a targeted range of 430 miles, likely as measured on the European WLTP testing cycle.

Both new models will be built in the UK. The Jag will be built in Solihull, while the Range Rover and other EMA-based models will be built at JLR’s Halewood plant in Merseyside, which will become the automaker’s first all-electric production facility. JLR also plans to transform an engine plant in Wolverhampton for EV powertrain production.
JLR’s electrification efforts have not been without setbacks, as the company unexpectedly dropped their flagship XJ EV in 2021 when it was less than 18 months away from production. However, they promised their own “absolutely bespoke” platform for future EVs instead, last year.
In the meantime, Jaguar has made improvements to their I-Pace, including faster charging. The company has also learned from their Formula E racing experience, potentially resulting in range gains.

I think it is great that they are investing so much money into electric vehicles, and I hope that other companies will follow suit.
