Ford is seeking a patent for novel hardware for its pickup truck beds.
In an application filed on October 19, 2021 and published on April 20, 2023, the Blue Oval has proposed a pop-up bed rail system, which would be contained within the bed sides and activated by actuators, as seen in the application.

Ford sees several benefits to this type of rail system. The rails could hold up taller goods by connecting nets between them and could also act as an ideal anchor point for rooftop tents or other accessories, as other OEMs and aftermarket manufacturers already do with fixed bed-rail systems.
The patent application proposes other innovative uses for the movable rails. They could hoist cargo from the ground to bed height with a pivoting attachment, akin to an in-bed crane. A brace of pivoting crossbars could also provide support for a cargo cover, which could sit flush with the top of the cab, improving the truck’s aerodynamics but still accommodating taller goods.

Ford has several other patent filings related to trucks. This year, the company has pursued patents for a pickup with a midgate and fold-flat seats, a bed cross-member system that could help users winch cargo into the bed, and a solid axle with hub motors that would be appropriate for electric trucks.
Meanwhile, Ford’s competitors are also experimenting with innovations. Rivian has sought to patent a new bed storage solution, and General Motors recently trademarked the name Multistow tailgate, which suggests a new tailgate design. However, patent and trademark filings do not necessarily translate into concrete production plans, so it remains to be seen which concepts, if any, will progress beyond the patent stage.
