Shanghai Auto Show to showcase the all-new Smart #3 coupe-styled crossover

Although Smart is no longer active in the U.S., the minicar brand is still going strong and has started a reboot with the release of their #1 electric subcompact crossover last year.

The Smart reboot is in the process of planning their second model, the #3, which will most likely be a coupe-like version of the #1, as indicated by teaser materials. The launch of the #3 will take place on April 18 at the 2023 Shanghai auto show.

The #1 and #3 are both developed in China by the Smart Automobile joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Zhejiang Geely. While details have not yet been revealed, it is expected that the mechanical components of the #1 are shared with the #3. The #1 utilizes a shortened version of Geely’s SEA modular electric-vehicle platform, which provides fast charging support and over-the-air updates.

The #1 has a standard single electric motor at the rear axle rated at 268 hp, with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration available in the top-of-the-line Brabus model, rated at 422 hp. With a sole battery capacity of 66-kwh, the #1 can charge at rates up to 150 kw and offers a maximum range of 270 miles on the overseas WLTP test cycle. The EPA cycle is stricter, which would result in a lower rating.

Expect similar specifications for the #3 model.

Smart plans to begin sales of the #3 later this year in the markets where the brand is currently operating. Pricing details will be disclosed closer to the launch date.
