This week, GlobalData analyst Amalia Maiden explored the potential impact of the metaverse on future in-car experiences. Despite facing scepticism, the metaverse is predicted to become a significant opportunity for the automotive industry, with a forecasted market of US$626.5bn by 2030, according to GlobalData. The metaverse, defined as a virtual world where users share experiences and interact in real time within simulated scenarios, incorporates a range of technologies such as cloud computing, AI, blockchain, VR, digital twins, and adtech. The metaverse could transform how people work, shop, communicate, and consume content, with some of its most promising applications in the automotive industry including the potential to make digital media experiences more immersive, inclusive, and accessible. As the industry moves towards self-driving vehicles predicted to arrive around 2035, the metaverse and augmented reality (AR) will play a significant role in onboard information and entertainment systems.
