V-8 Hybrid McLaren P1 Successor to Launch in 2026, Reports Claim

On Tuesday, at a dealer meeting, McLaren disclosed information about a P1 successor and a possible SUV, according to Automotive News (subscription required), referring to two of the dealers. The P1 successor is expected to be launched around 2026, and will feature a V-8 hybrid powertrain, similar to the one found in the P1, which was introduced in 2013.

However, the hybrid system in the successor will be approximately 70% lighter and may exclude plug-in hybrid technology. An electric motor will assist the engine, but there is speculation that this setup will not enable the car to be powered entirely by electricity.

The successor is expected to deliver a much higher horsepower than the P1’s peak of 903 hp, according to one of the sources.

Additional information given by the sources included a new carbon-fiber monocoque with built-in seatbacks, a new dihedral door design, Formula 1-inspired aerodynamics, and 3D-printed suspension parts.

According to the sources, McLaren confirmed plans to sell only electrified cars by 2026, including a hybrid successor to the new 750S supercar, due in 2026. The 750S was recently unveiled and will be one of the last McLarens with an internal-combustion engine. Before the successor’s arrival in 2026, there may be some special editions and additional versions of the 750S.

At the same dealer meeting, the sources claimed that McLaren disclosed plans for a new vehicle class scheduled to arrive in 2028. According to Jamie Corstorphine, McLaren’s director of product strategy, this car may have four doors and four seats. Corstorphine previously suggested that McLaren was considering an SUV during a 2022 interview.
