The Waze navigation app is being integrated with Volvo’s infotainment systems, providing drivers with local traffic conditions.
This move was announced by the automaker on Wednesday, specifically for the US market. Owners of newer Volvo models with Android-powered infotainment systems can download Waze from the Google Play Store, with the one-time download enabling real-time routing, navigation, and traffic alerts in the car, just as it does on mobile devices. Volvo collaborated with Waze to ensure compatibility with cars’ infotainment systems, using an Android emulator to test the in-car version.

Volvo Waze integration
The Android-based infotainment system, which launched in the Polestar 2 and became available on Volvo models starting with the 2022 XC60, enabled the integration with Waze. This system provides Google Services, such as Google Maps, Google Play Store, and Google Assistant, and other automakers are taking similar approaches, with General Motors planning to phase out Apple CarPlay, and standalone Android Auto.

Volvo Waze integration
Volvo still plans to maintain Apple CarPlay compatibility for the time being, but it will be introducing future updates to its infotainment systems. A new user interface, which will debut in the upcoming 2024 EX90 electric SUV, will reduce driver distraction by displaying only the necessary information according to context.
The US-market EX90 models will be produced in South Carolina and will be available for delivery starting in 2024.
